Why it matters
There is a point where clearing a gutter every year is more expensive than replacing it. A run that has sagged between brackets, split at the joints or been fitted with the fall running the wrong way will never drain properly, however often it is cleared.
What the job involves
- Work out whether it is the gutter or the fall that has failed, because they are different fixes.
- Strip the old run and check the fascia behind it — that is where the rot usually is, and it is far cheaper to find it now.
- Fit new brackets at proper centres, set to a real fall towards the outlets.
- Hang the new run, with the joints and stop ends set properly rather than forced.
- Run water through it and watch it go.

How often does guttering need replacing?
Good uPVC guttering lasts twenty to thirty years. What ends it early is rarely the plastic — it is brackets pulling out, joints going brittle in UV, or a fall that was wrong from the day it was fitted. A run that is sagging between brackets is at the end of its life whatever its age.
How much does new guttering cost for a 3 bed house?
Typically £700 to £1,800 depending on the length of the run, the height and the access. If the fascia behind it is going as well — which is common, because a leaking gutter is what rotted it — doing both together is substantially cheaper than doing them a year apart.
What is the best time of year to replace gutters?

Do you need scaffolding to replace guttering?
Not usually on a two-storey house with reasonable access — ladders and a tower are normally enough. Three storeys, conservatory or extension obstructions, or a gutter run over a sloping garden are the cases where a tower or scaffold becomes the safe answer rather than the convenient one.
