Why it matters
White uPVC does not go grey evenly. It streaks, it greens on the shaded runs and it collects a black line under the gutter lip — and because it is at roof level nobody sees how bad it has got until it is washed.
What the job involves
- Wash the boards down with a soft brush and a cleaning solution rather than a lance.
- Work the black line under the gutter lip, which is where the staining actually is.
- Do the soffits and bargeboards as well as the fascia face, since a clean fascia over a green soffit looks worse than neither.
- Rinse down and check the run for splits, movement and rot while there.
What it costs
£100–£300 for a typical house is the typical UK range for this work — usually done alongside a gutter clear. That is a guide to the market, not a quote: yours is free, fixed before we start, and based on your actual property.
What moves the price:
- the length of the run and the height
- access, particularly over conservatories and extensions
- how bad the staining is, and whether it is algae or oxidised plastic
- whether the gutters are being done at the same time, which is the sensible pairing
When to do it
Spring, generally alongside the gutter clear. There is no weather constraint beyond wanting a dry, still day to work from a ladder.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Does black uPVC fascia fade?
Yes, more visibly than white. Dark uPVC oxidises in UV and the south and west elevations go first, which is why one side of a house often looks chalky while the other still looks new. Washing removes the dirt on top; it does not reverse oxidation in the plastic itself.
Does WD-40 restore faded plastic?
It makes it look better for a few weeks by wetting the surface, then it attracts dirt and you are worse off. Faded uPVC is oxidised on the surface — the honest options are a proper clean, a uPVC restorer, or replacement if it has gone too far.
How much does fascia and soffit cleaning cost?
Typically £100 to £300 for a normal house, and it is usually cheapest booked alongside a gutter clear, since the ladder is already going to the same places.
