Why it matters
Block paving relies on the sand between the blocks for its strength. Once weed and moss have pushed that sand out, the blocks start to move — so cleaning a drive and not re-sanding it makes it worse, not better.
What the job involves
- Kill the weed off first rather than washing living roots around the drive.
- Wash the surface at a pressure the blocks take, working in a controlled pattern so the finish is even.
- Lift the oil and rust staining separately — pressure alone does not shift either.
- Re-sand the joints with kiln-dried sand, brushed and vibrated in. This is the part that matters.
- Seal where it is wanted, on a dry surface.
What it costs
£150–£450 for a typical drive is the typical UK range for this work — sealing is usually additional. That is a guide to the market, not a quote: yours is free, fixed before we start, and based on your actual property.
What moves the price:
- area, and how much edging and detail there is
- the surface: block paving, concrete, flags and tarmac are four different jobs
- oil and rust staining, which is separate work
- re-sanding, and whether the drive wants sealing afterwards
When to do it
Spring through autumn. Re-sanding needs a dry surface to work at all — sand brushed into a wet joint bridges over instead of filling it — so the job wants a dry run of a couple of days.
Different roofs and walls need different handling
Millstone grit. Stone setts and gritstone edging take a working pressure, but the joints between them will not.
Magnesian limestone. Limestone setts and edging are soft and mark, and want a lower pressure than the blocks alongside them.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I pressure wash my block paving driveway?
Yes, but the sand comes out with the moss, and if it is not put back the blocks lose their interlock and start to rock and spread. Re-sanding with kiln-dried sand afterwards is not an upsell — it is the half of the job that keeps the drive together.
How much does driveway cleaning cost in the UK?
Typically £150 to £450 for a normal domestic drive, including re-sanding. Sealing is usually extra. Heavy oil staining, rust marks and very large or heavily detailed drives push it above that.
What not to do when pressure washing a driveway?
Do not hold the lance in one place — it scars block paving in a way that never blends back. Do not wash without a plan for the joints, because the sand is coming out whether you planned for it or not. And do not do it on tarmac at full pressure: tarmac is bound with bitumen and a hard jet strips the surface off it.
How do professionals clean driveways?
Weed treatment first, then a rotary surface cleaner rather than a hand lance, which gives an even finish instead of the striping a hand-held wand leaves. Then staining is dealt with separately, and the joints are re-sanded and vibrated in.
