Repair or replace?
Repair is right for a single split joint, one pulled bracket, or a localised sag on an otherwise sound run.
Replace is right when:
- the run sags between multiple brackets — the fixings have gone, not the gutter
- joints are brittle and cracking when touched, which is UV degradation and it is everywhere on the run, not just where it shows
- the fall is wrong, which no amount of clearing will fix
- the fascia behind it is soft
That last one is the one that decides most jobs.
Check the fascia before you price the gutter
Press the fascia board behind the gutter. If it gives, or a screwdriver goes in without much effort, the timber has gone — and the brackets holding your new gutter would be screwed into rotten wood.
This matters financially, not just technically. Doing gutter and fascia together shares the access, the setup and the labour. Doing them a year apart means paying for all of that twice, and it is routinely 30–40% more expensive overall.
If the gutter has been leaking for years, assume the fascia needs looking at. That is what the water has been running down.
What a proper replacement includes
- The old system stripped and taken away
- The fascia behind it inspected once it is exposed — this is the only point at which anyone can actually see it
- New brackets at proper centres, set to a real fall towards the outlets
- The run hung with joints and stop ends set rather than forced
- Water run through it at the end and watched
Getting the fall right
This is the thing that separates a job that works from a job that looks fine. Guttering needs a consistent fall towards the outlet — a few millimetres per metre. Too little and it holds water and silts up; too much and it looks wrong and overshoots at the outlet.
A surprising number of gutters that “always block” were simply hung level. No amount of cleaning fixes that.

Do you need scaffolding to replace guttering?
Not usually on a two-storey house with reasonable access — ladders and a tower are normally enough. Three storeys, conservatory obstructions, or a run over a sloping garden are where a tower or scaffold becomes the safe answer rather than the convenient one.
